Crystal Lake History
The city of Crystal Lake was founded in 1835 by Beman & Polly Crandall. The couple, and six of their 10 children made their home here. Residents first settled around Route 14 and the lake itself. Interesting history reveals that an old trail, formed by the Sac and Fox tribes connected Fort Dearborn in Chicago through Northwest Illinois. A portion of that historic trail, is now known as Virginia Street (Route 14) in Crystal Lake. The first train station was built in 1856. The railroad served to connect the people and industries of the communities to Chicago and the rest of the country. The villages of Crystal Lake and Nunda were incorporated in 1874. The village of Nunda was annexed to the city of Crystal lake in 1914.
Recent Crystal Lake History
Crystal Lake has grown substantially in the past 20 years. Between 1990 and 2000, census records show that the population increased from 21,823 to 38,000. In early years, Crystal Lake Community High School (now Crystal Lake Central High School) was the only high school in the city. To accommodate the population growth, Crystal Lake South High School was opened in 1978. And then, in 1997, a third high school, Prairie Ridge High School, was established. The third high school, Prairie Ridge, helps to service the neighboring communities of Prairie Grove and Bull Valley.
Crystal Lake Metro Area
Crystal Lake was named after a lake. The main beach is located 1.6 miles southwest of the city’s downtown. And, situated 45 miles northwest of Chicago, it is the largest city in McHenry County. Crystal Lake is surrounded by the Villages of Bull Valley, Prairie Grove, Lakewood, Ridgefield, Oakwood Hills & Cary, Illinois.
Crystal Lake Architecture
The Dole Mansion is a lavish estate overlooking Crystal Lake. It was built by Charles S. Dole in 1864. The three-story home features exquisite architectural details. Dole imported european craftsman to build parquet floors & elegant archways. In addition, they carved beautiful wood work from black walnut trees grown on the property. Charles Dole maintained the mansion for over 30 years. Today, it’s owned by the Lakeside Legacy. Community events and festivals are held on the grounds every year.
Raue Center for the Arts
In 1929, El Tovar, a movie and vaudeville theatre, was opened in downtown Crystal Lake. Now, known as the Raue Center For the Arts, this entertainment venue is a welcome addition in Northern Illinois. The namesake for this historic building is Lucile Raue. Her generous, monetary gift funded the much needed renovation of the building. Reconstruction of the site took 2-years. Since it’s restoration, the Raue has attracted the finest stars, Broadway shows, musicians and artists.
