The Village of Barrington has the largest residential historic district in the State of Illinois. In addition, Barrington is well known for its diverse architectural styles. More than 350 properties are included in Barrington’s Historic Preservation Overlay district. Among the prominent styles represented are Victorian, Tudor, Colonial, Folk, and Italianate. The late 19th and early 20th century marks the period where most of Barrington’s historic structures were built (1885-1935). Each style represents the historical significance of a different period in American history. The progression can be seen in the design influences as well as the technology used during construction. Barrington architecture is like a history book with each page telling a story about the life and times of those who lived here.
This vibrant community balances new developments and a growing landscape with preserving the beauty and style of the past. The combination of old and new makes Barrington one of the top places to live in Illinois.
Some of the more interesting historical structures in Barrington include the Octagon House (223 West Main Street, Barrington, IL) Catlow Theater, (116 W. Main Street, Barrington, IL) and Ice House Mall (200 Applebee Street, Barrington, IL). Among the more stunning examples of Barrington architecture can be found on Lake Street. This quiet, tree-lined street contains some of the best examples of Queen Anne homes anywhere in Illinois.
Perhaps the most interesting structure in Barrington was designed by a Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice, Don Erickson. Erickson acquired a 10-acre plot of wooded land on the north side of Barrington in 1966. He built his house and there with his wife and three children. During the spring of 1967, a series of tornadoes destroyed 140 in the area including Erickson’s. In 1969 Erickson rebuilt his home into a masterpiece. Using exposed brick, glass walls, and many other elements that made Wright-style homes so interesting. Erickson created one of the great gems of Barrington.
Plaque and markers can be found throughout the village with details on each location’s historical significance.
Pioneers from New York eventually settled in the region of Barrington Center in the 1830’s. The various settlements came together in 1850 to form a township under the common name Barrington. In 1854, Robert Campbell completed plans for the village of Barrington Station. Eventually the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad connected to the village as well. In 1855 the first mill was built in order to expand construction. This mill still stands on Franklin Street. The village of Barrington was established in 1865 after a referendum was approved to separate township powers and approve the charter. The village grew quickly and as Chicago developed, so too did the countryside around Barrington.
Advancements in transportation and the economic boom in the 1920’s allowed wealthy families to move into the suburbs and build family estates. Barrington was considered a prime location for these developments and the area enjoyed a great deal of prosperity. After a dip in growth during the depression era, the village saw renewed expansion in the post-World War II era with baby boomers looking for suburban sprawl and quality of life.
Barrington was also the site of the famous 1934 ‘Battle of Barrington”, where two FBI agents were killed along with notorious gangster Babyface Nelson. The FBI agents are honored at the Langendorf Park location where the battle took place.
